You will also need a few tools as well to connect the pool hoses and to also connect the PVC plumbing unions that may be on both the pump and filter. You will need a screwdriver to tighten the hose clamps, a pair of channel locks to tighten the PVC plumbing unions and you may also need some Teflon tape to wrap around some of the plumbing fittings if they are loose or worn from the prior years use. You will also need a bucket so you can prime the pump and start it up after you are all done connecting it.
You will also need a source of electrical power for your above ground filter system as well. Once you have gathered the tools, made sure that you have electrical power to the outlet near your filter system you then will want to take the filter and the pump over to the filter area where you will be setting the filter system up. Some above ground filter systems have plastic bases that both the pump and the filter will sit on.
You will want to make sure that you level the ground first before you place the plastic base down. This will ensure that the pump and the filter will sit level and the pump will run properly throughout the swimming pool season. If the plastic pump base is not level it could cause the pump to not run properly, so you will always want to spend a few minutes to make sure that the pump base is level.
You can level the pump base easily with a flat shovel and a torpedo level.

A sand filter pump is the most efficient and lowest maintenance filter pump option for your above ground swimming pool. The sand filtration media lasts 5 years on average and this saves you money since you will not need to buy replacement filter cartridges every summer. Plus, sand filter pumps tend to last times longer than traditional filter cartridge pumps for above ground pools.
A swimming pool filter helps maintain clean and healthy pool water. The pump sends water to the filter, which cleans it out before sending it back out into the pool. Public pools follow certain laws stating that a certain amount of water must go through the filter in a certain amount of time.
Winterization also requires you to disconnect the hoses for the pool, pump and filter. Once the winter is over, and the outdoor temperatures begin to rise, it is time to reopen the pool for the summer. Trying to remember where each of the three hoses attach to your filter, pool and pump can quickly spell disaster if you mix up the connections. Dual sand filters Specially made filter sand Dual sand filters Specially made filter sand The filters in this system are high-rate sand filters. Sand filters consist of a large tank, made of fiberglass, concrete or metal, containing a thick bed of special-grade sand, which has a squarish shape. During filtering operation, dirty water from the pool comes in through the filter’s inlet pipe, which leads to the water distribution head inside the tank. While gravity pulls the water down through the sand, the tiny sand particles catch any dirt and debris.
At the bottom of the tank, the filtered water flows through the pick-up unit and out the outlet pipe. Over time, the collected dirt and debris in the sand slows down the water flow. Pressure gauges at the filter inlet and outlet give the pool custodian an idea of the blockage level inside. If gauges show much greater pressure on the inlet pipe than the outlet pipe, the custodian knows there’s a lot of collected debris in the sand. This means it’s time to backwash the filter.
To backwash, the custodian adjusts a number of valves to redirect the water flow. He or she closes the return pipe leading to the pool and opens the drainage pipe, which lead to the sewer system.

Deciding which filter to use with your pool is important. Size is the first thing to figure out. To determine the size of filter you require is simple mathematical calculations: Determine volume of your pool length x width x depth x 7. Divide the pool capacity in gallons by the turnover rate: Divide the gallons per hour by 60 to get gallons per minute. Choose a water filter system that matches or exceeds the flow in gallons per minute you calculated. Above ground pool filters Many above ground pools come as a complete system which includes the water filtration system too.
As you are buying the above ground pool, it would be best to inquire as to what type of filter comes with the system to make sure you are getting sufficient flow and cleaning power.
The top of the filter is called the Dial Valve and changes the direction of the water flow through the filter. You should always turn off the pump when turning the handle to a different position. On the filter position the water will come from the pump and go down through the diffuser plate to displace the water over the sand. Then it goes through the sand to be cleaned. Then the cleaned water goes through the fingers, or laterals at the bottom up through the hub pipe and back to the pool.
Filter is the setting that you will run you filter most of the time to clean your pool.
To hook up hoses to a pool pump and filter, attach the other end of the hose from the skimmer pipe to the pump, connect the opposite end of the return hose to the pool filter valve, and attach another hose to connect the pool pump and filter together.
How to Remove Pollen From a Swimming Pool Fine debris such as dust, sand and dirt is carried into a pool on the feet of swimmers or on the breeze. While a skimmer removes larger items such as leaves or insects, fine matter drifts to the bottom of the pool and forms a layer of sediment. Keeping the pool bottom clean requires a pump and filter combination, a pool vacuum or special debris-filtering equipment.
Pump and Filter A pump and filter team up to remove fine debris from the pool water. The pump ensures that the water circulates through the filter, which removes fine particles. The filters typically are filled with sand, diatomaceous earth or zeolite, which can remove fine particles and chlorine odors. A pool pump typically runs up to eight hours per day. The pump and filter combination takes care of suspended and floating particles, but it might be ineffective at cleaning up debris that settles at the bottom of the pool.
Swept Away While it may seem surprising if you’re new to pool care, the walls inside the pool require scrubbing with a stiff brush even while water is in the pool. This loosens the debris that clings to the walls, allowing it to travel down to the bottom of the pool where it can be removed. Brush the walls every week during swimming season while the pump is turned off.
A vacuum removes the debris that collects on the bottom. Vacuuming requires moving the vacuum head over the debris on the bottom of the pool until the bottom appears clean. Backwash Basics A filter hard at work removing debris from the water also collects and stores this debris.
